How to choose exterior paint

We have covered how to choose paint colours inside your home… but what about outside? The outside of your home is incredibly important, especially if you are planning to sell! But, if not, it should still welcome you home every day and hopefully put a smile on your face.

Just like inside there are thousands of colours and finishes to choose from. Daunting, right? Let’s get started.

Painting exterior

Light, mid or dark exterior paint?

Generally light colours will make your home feel larger and the tone will be more affected by natural light. Whilst dark paint colours can make it feel smaller and make it blend into its surroundings. Keep in mind that either extreme is likely to fade and change more with time.

How many colours?

Here at Grant Steel Painters & Decorators as a rule of thumb we like to work with 2-3 colours when painting an exterior.

Main Colour – dominating large parts of your house

Accent Colour – for things such as shutters and doors

Trim Colour – For the details

A great way to choose these colours is to find a Main & Trim colour that are compatible and then lastly find a contrasting accent.

Roof colour should be considered when choosing exterior paint.

What colour is my roof?

Keep in mind what your unpainted areas look like. Such as roofs and pvc windows. This can help guide your colour choices. If there are natural brick colours this could also be a great place to take colour choices from.

What about the neighbours?

Not only do they have to look at your house…. But it might also be a good idea to check out what’s around you. Not only in terms of houses but the general landscape as well.

Sample, sample, sample

Just like you would indoors – make sure to put up some samples! Natural light can have huge effects on the way the colour looks at different times of the day. This means that it’s important to come back and check it out both day and night.
